Hi, my name is Chemutai, the founder and CEO of Asili Interiors. My curiosity, passion and enthusiasm for ethnic textiles, handmade techniques, plant-based natural fibers and women economic empowerment inspired me to build this collection in order to showcase the uniqueness, cultural diversity and talent of the communities that make these products, majority of whom are women.
I give priority to collections that are unexplored, natural and that which testify of the skills, creativity, craftsmanship and dexterity of Ethnic artisans. I love to share the pieces of art which reflects the history, culture, religious beliefs and different lifestyles. There is no better way to understand and experience other cultures than through textiles and the stories behind each of them. Having a piece of this shade of ethnicity will enable you to experience an exotic space with vibrant colours, diverse prints and relaxed ambience in your interiors.
Sources of the collection
Good design and good relationships arise from collaboration. Currently, I work with local women in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to design the collection. I purchase the fabrics at source from their country of origin. I collect unique pieces of cotton fabrics with ethnic prints, designs and colours, among them Ankara, Kitenge, Kanga and Kikoy. I Purchase Sisal and Jute from the small scale women retailers in Kenya. With the help of these women, we then piece them together to create the collection. My preference goes to individual and company packagings as well as interior decor for home, office and restaurants.
My collection is very vibrant, beautiful and very unique. The traditional designs and ethnic touch adds to the appeal, tranquillity and style of your modern interiors. The jute and sisal fibers offer strong and durable bags and baskets with ventilating and absorbent properties. The structure of the fabric of jute and sisal bags and baskets, prevents damage to the packaged product and so they are of excellent quality. The most interesting element about these textiles is that they are made from pure natural fibers which are eco-efficient, biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Therefore I combine traditional skills with natural materials.
My customers are interior designers, private and professional ethnic textile collectors and lovers as well as stylists from different parts of the region.
